Can you run, jump or throw? SGUL Athletics & Cross-Country Club has been going for 5 years now, having started back in 2005. It doesn’t matter how fit you are; whether you are a world-class athlete or you fancy giving it a go for the first time, we want you.
Here in Tooting we are very lucky to be walking distance to an athletics track at Tooting Bec, but this is also home to the Herne Hill Harriers (HHH), one of the oldest running clubs in London. HHH prides itself on catering for all standards, but has also produced elite athletes such as long jumper Jade Johnson. The coaches are not paid but come regularly on a completely voluntary basis. Our training is now closely linked with HHH, and we are always on the lookout for new talent.
On the athletics side of things, we take part in competitions ranging from beginner meets within the University of London. If you are looking for higher level competition, then the club president (Anthony Mah) is also the captain of the University of London Athletics Club and would love to hear from you! If you want to train:
Our Cross-Country runners are out running every week, in the parks and roads around Tooting or at the Track with the Athletes! Although it would be nice if you trained with us, what we really need you for is competitions! In the winter we take part in the London Colleges League every Wednesday and other races such as the Hyde Park Relays. In the summer you can find us running the longer distances at competitions alongside the Athletes! A few of our members are also keen marathon runners and triathletes!
It doesn’t matter how old you are, what course you are on, or how many other clubs and societies you join. Get fitter, get faster, get stronger, but most importantly, meet new people and have fun!
